NOAH WYLE AND TIERNEY

First up, exec producer Dee Johnson has nothing to say about whether Jing-Mei (Ming-Na) and Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) survived the finale's road rage shooting, though rumors abound that Ming-Na isn't returning for the series' 11th season. Simply put: ''The cliff-hangers will be resolved.'' Mmmmkay.

Moving on: Alex Kingston's Dr. Corday will get a proper send-off, after the actress' contract wasn't renewed. ''It's a matter of her story having run its course,'' says Johnson. ''There's only so much that can happen to these people before it starts seeming [like]: How much more can they possibly endure?'' Joining the cast is Madchen Amick (''Twin Peaks'') as a love interest for Noah Wyle, and Shane West (''A Walk to Remember'') as a first-year intern working alongside Neela (Parminder Nagra) and Abby (Maura Tierney), who's now a doctor. ''Everybody has been on the show for so long that all our people were attending physicians,'' Johnson says. ''We needed some med students who are learning -- so they're not at the top of their game.''

WYLE READY FOR "ER" DISCHARGE

Noah Wyle tells E! News Live that he's going to check out of ER following the show's upcoming 11th season.

"I've just got other stuff going in my life right now," Wyle says. "I've got a son, I've got family and friends that said goodbye to me 12 years ago and are wondering when I'm coming back, and this little urge to scratch a different kind of itch in my career, and it's just coming to the end of the character's run."

During his summer hiatus, Wyle, whose non-ER credits include The Pirates of Silicon Valley, White Oleander, Donnie Darko and The Myth of Fingerprints, worked on the TNT TV movie The Librarian, which is set to air in December. He also has an indie romantic comedy called The Californians in the can.

A five-time Emmy nominee, Wyle has been the one constant on the show since day one, with his Dr. John Carter growing from naive County General resident to the show's backbone. He's the only major ER player to have stuck with the show through its 10-season run, outlasting cast stalwarts like George Clooney (news) , Anthony Edwards (news), Julianna Margulies and Eriq La Salle.

Wyle, 33, signed a lucrative deal in 2001 that made him one of TV's highest paid stars. That contract expired at the end of last season, but Wyle decided to reup for the 2004-05 campaign.

Last season ended in tragedy for Carter and gal-pal Makemba "Kem" Likasu (Thandie Newton), who lost the baby she was carrying.

Carter's love life looks to be a focus of the new season, too. Although there's no word whether Newton will return for any episodes, former Twin Peaks beauty Madchen Amick (news) will be joining the NBC series as a recurring guest star, playing an idealistic social worker who falls for the dashing doc.

The addition of Amick comes just a few months after word that Alex Kingston's contract had not been extended, meaning her Dr. Corday will be ditching County General sometime this season. Meanwhile, A Walk to Remember's Shane West has joined the cast as maverick Dr. Ray Barnett. Amick and West are the latest infusion of new blood to the hospital drama, which added fresh faces like Linda Cardellini (news) (nurse Sam Taggert) and Parminder Nagra (medical student Neela Rasgotra) last season.

Reps for show producer Warner Bros. TV and NBC insist that Wyle's exit is not a fait accompli. They say there have been no discussions yet about extending his current new contract and a new deal could still be hammered out.

But Wyle says it's time for him, and ER, to move on.

"It feels like the show is on the edge of reinventing itself," he tells E! "It's time to take it to that next evolutionary place, where names like George and Tony, Eriq, Julianna and Noah are a thing of the past, and names like Shane, Linda and Parminder are a thing of the future."

Noah Wyle, the last major character to remain with NBC's "ER" since the medical drama premiered in 1994, plans to leave the series at the end of this season.

"I've just got other stuff going in my life right now," Wyle told E! News Live. "I've got a son, I've got family and friends that said goodbye to me 12 years ago and are wondering when I'm coming back, and this little urge to scratch a different kind of itch in my career, and it's just coming to the end of the character's run."

Wyle, 33, plays Dr. John Carter and is the sole survivor of an original cast that included Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Eriq La Salle and Julianna Margulies.

The Associated Press reports that Wyle's announcement came as a surprise to the series' creator John Wells and the producers, Warner Bros. Television.

"He's clear on what he said," said Wyle's spokesman, Eddie George. "That's where his head is at. That could change. There's a lot of things that could happen between now and the end of the season."

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman said only, "people are going to have to stay tuned to see what's happening."

Besides ER, for which has had received five Emmy nominations, over the past few years Wyle has appeared in such movies as Enough, White Oleander and Donnie Darko. His "ER" contract expires at the end of this season, says AP, noting that this spring Wyle watched as Friends, another NBC staple, faded away.

"The day the cast filmed their last episode, I saw them in the commissary. It was heavy," said Wyle. "Here they were, closing a defining chapter in each of their lives, and all I could do was think: 'The end of that chapter's coming, for me.'"

NOAH WYLE TO LEAVE 'ER' AT SEASON'S END

Noah Wyle, the last continuous on-air link to the NBC medical drama "ER's" freshman season in 1994, seems headed for the doctor's retirement home.

Wyle, who plays Dr. John Carter, told E! Entertainment Television on Thursday that he plans to leave the show at the end of this season.

"I've just got other stuff going in my life right now," Wyle told "E! News Live'. "I've got a son, I've got family and friends that said goodbye to me 12 years ago and are wondering when I'm coming back, and this little urge to scratch a different kind of itch in my career, and it's just coming to the end of the character's run."

Wyle was the impressionable young resident among a powerhouse cast that included Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Eriq La Salle and Julianna Margulies. As they all left around him, Wyle became the show's promotional centerpiece.

He may have talked to E! about leaving, but he hasn't told series creator John Wells or the producers, Warner Bros. Television, said Wyle's spokesman, Eddie George.

"He's clear on what he said," George said. "That's where his head is at. That could change. There's a lot of things that could happen between now and the end of the season."

A Warner Bros. spokeswoman said only, "people are going to have to stay tuned to see what's happening."

The five-time Emmy Award nominee's contract expires at the end of this season. This spring he watched as another popular Warner Bros. show that debuted the same season, "Friends," made its goodbye.

"The day the cast filmed their last episode, I saw them in the commissary. It was heavy," he told The Associated Press. "Here they were, closing a defining chapter in each of their lives, and all I could do was think: `The end of that chapter's coming, for me.'"

Earlier in the year he said he thought about leaving several times.

What made him stay?

"The money, probably," he said.

"ER" will outlast him. NBC has locked up the show for another season past this one and, barring an unexpected downturn in the ratings, it will likely continue beyond that.

"It feels like the show is on the edge of reinventing itself," Wyle told E!. "It's time to take it to that next evolutionary place, where names like George and Tony, Eriq, Julianna and Noah are a thing of the past, and names like Shane (West), Linda (Cardellini) and Parminder (Nagra) are a thing of the future."

'ER' DOCTOR WYLE SAYS SEASON MAY BE LAST

Noah Wyle, the last remaining member of the original cast of NBC's hit drama, "ER," may be hanging up his stethoscope and doctor scrubs at the end of the current, 11th season.

In an interview on cable TV's E! News Live, Wyle said he will be leaving the show, but the actor's publicist on Friday characterized Wyle's position as more "wait-and-see" than absolute.

"I've just got other stuff going on in my life right now," Wyle told E! News Live. "I've got a son. I've got family and friends that said goodbye to me 12 years ago and are wondering when I'm coming back."

When asked if he was leaving, Wyle responded with a quick, "yep."

He went on to say he had an "urge to scratch a different kind of itch in my career."

His publicist, Los Angeles-based Eddie Michaels, said Wyle's statements reflected the actor's personal and professional stage in life.

But Michaels added that even though Wyle's contract on the hospital drama ends this season, he has had no formal talks with the show's producers about leaving or about staying.

"Where this leads in next few months, we'll just have to wait-and-see," Michaels said. "What he was really saying is that he's thought about it, and thought about it in a real, meaningful way."

Wyle has an action-packed made-for-TV movie called "The Librarian" scheduled to air on cable TV channel TNT in December.

On "ER," Wyle portrays Dr. John Carter of County General Hospital, who has risen from a young resident to a respected physician over the years.

The drama became an instant hit for NBC when it first aired in 1994, and it went on to earn several Emmys -- the U.S. television industry's top honors. Wyle, too, has been nominated for an Emmy for his work on the show.
